We are a group of patients who volunteer to help students in the various healthcare professions at the University of Toronto. For most sessions, the students practise taking our medical history and then practise the clinical skills they have learned that day. Some of us are "Patient Partners in Arthritis" whereby we actually demonstrate some clinical skills to the students. It is a very flexible volunteer job - we are given a list of the dates when volunteer patients are needed and we sign up for any dates that we are free. Sessions are typically 1.5 - 3 hours long. It is incredibly rewarding to meet the students and their instructors and help them in their learning.
We also volunteer as patient advocates and patient experience reps, attending conferences and sharing our experiences and insights at meetings and via focus groups and questionnaires.
Participating in the Walk to Fight Arthritis as a Team from 2011 till the present has been GREAT: to date our families and friends have donated over $52,600 to this worthwhile cause. We look forward to continuing the tradition on Sunday June 3, 2018 at Woodbine Park. You can make a difference by donating to any of our team members. Thank you for your support.
PS - if you would like to participate in these medical education and/or patient advocate volunteer activities, please contact Nancy Roper at firstname.lastname@example.org. She can direct you to the volunteer coordinator for the group of interest.
