Cleo was just over one year old when we were sent to the IWK in Halifax, NS. Although I'll never forget hearing the news that she had Idiopathic Arthritis, I knew by looking around us at the other sick children, that things could always be much worse.
Right away, Cleo was on numerous medical treatments, with varrying side effects, to hopefully stop the progression of her Arthritis. She was also fit for hard insoles to help her legs grow correctly, as they were bowing inwards from the inflammation. Unfortunately, Cleo has never been able to run or bend properly, as her Arthritis battles with her back, hips, legs and feet.
Cleo is now a vibrant 10 year old, and her Arthritis has recently taken a turn for the worse. Upon recieving results of an MRI, Cleo's lower spine has begun fusing with her pelvis. The inflammation in her back and hips have greatly increased and her diagnosis was changed to Ankylosing Spondylitis. Our fingers had been crossed that she would out grow her Arthritis, but unfortunately she'll now battle with this the rest of her life. Cleo has recently started recieiving Live Biological Treatments and we're awaiting further tests and checkups at the IWK.
Despite the struggles we now have, Cleo has never let this hold her back. She excells in French Immersion at school, has plenty of friends, and variety of interests. I'm incredibly proud to be her Mumma, and I love her tot he moon & back....
And this is why we are walking this June
