We are walking because there is no cure for arthritis, a painful and devastating disease that has affected our Jada. Diagnosed at 3 years old, Jada has undergone various treatment efforts from conventional to alternative, with minimal to no relief. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis is an autoimmune condition that attacks your joints, and can eventually cause joint breakdown. Primarly affecting her feet, ankles and knee, it has resulted in pain with every step and can wake her from sleep. Ice on her feet at bedtime helps her to fall asleep. Medications result in frequent monitoring of liver and kidney function, and Jada has become very efficient in "helping" the lab techs know just how to give a needle :) At 5, Jada decided she wanted to be a doctor so she could help kids and their parents. "You can come see me with your dears too", she told her twin sister Makayla. If adversity makes you stronger, MY dear will sure move mountains. Now 6 years old, we are still fighting and hopeful that Jada will have pain-free days ahead.
More than 6 million Canadians are affected by arthritis. These numbers are only going to increase. By 2035, 1 in 4 Canadians will have arthritis. I always thought of arthritis as a condition that sets in after life catches up with you. We've seen that it's not always the case. That means that you and anyone close to you of any age, could be affected.
As the prevalence of arthritis increases, so does the demand for investment into cutting-edge research, proactive advocacy and innovative information and support that will deliver better health outcomes for people affected by arthritis.
