Arthritis Won’t Stop Me

From Being A Kid

Camp is a life-changing experience for kids like Jaylene. Donate now to support camps nationwide.

When Jaylene came home from camp, her mother saw the difference in her immediately. “She was glowing and her glow gave me the reassurance that this was not the end, but a new beginning for my daughter. It told me that this was going to be ok and that Jaylene would be ok.” Charlene, Jaylene’s mom

By age nine, Jaylene was taking 85 pills and receiving 8 injections on a weekly basis to manage Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (SJIA). Between the effects of the disease and the side effects of the medications, the injections felt like fire under her skin, Jaylene felt hopeless. But that changed when she attended the Arthritis Society’s camp.

Camp can be out of reach for kids with arthritis. Being away from home for a week and trying to manage multiple pills and sometimes injections isn’t possible for young kids. That’s why the Arthritis Society camps have nurses, and sometimes doctors on site, to administer medications and make sure the kids receive all the same care they would get at home.

For the 24,000 kids in Canada living with juvenile arthritis, it’s more than just camp.

It’s a place to belong.

If you live with arthritis, then you know that it can be isolating. Most of the kids who attend camp have never met another child with arthritis and the opportunity to connect with someone who really understands is invaluable.

Donate now to support the life-long friendships made at camp.
